Shimadzu, one of the world leaders in analytical instrumentation, has been awarded a Red Dot Design Award 2021 in the product design category for its iMScope QT. Already in 2019, Red Dot Awards were dedicated to Shimadzu’s Nexera UHPLC series LC 40 and the UV-1900 UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The flagship model for MS imaging will soon be available on the European market.

The Red Dot Design Award is one of the 3 major design awards in the world, alongside the German iF Design Award and the US IDEA Award. About 50 jurors were once again true to the motto “In search of good design and innovation” in the 2021 competition. The international panel of experts comprises specialists from a wide variety of sectors judging products based on innovation, functionality, quality, ergonomics and durability.

Red Dot represents the best in design and business. The award covers the areas of product design, communication design and design concepts. Red Dot looks back at a tradition spanning more than 60 years and appraises the best products created every year.

“The winners of the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2021 were particularly impressive this year. The design of their products is excellent, in terms of both aesthetics and functionality. It’s not easy to prevail in such a strong field of competitors and to win over our jury,” said Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of Red Dot.

Next generation mass spectrometry imaging

The iMScope QT is a newly developed instrument completing the Shimadzu iMScope series, enabling high performance MS imaging. It combines an LCMS-9030 Q-TOF mass spectrometry system with an optical microscope from the iMScope series to guarantee excellent speed, sensitivity and spatial resolution for data analysis. The LCMS-9030 Q-TOF is also an awarded device: in 2019, it achieved an iF Design Award, one of the leading design prizes worldwide for excellent aesthetics as well as for user-friendly, ergonomic and efficient features.

This date also marks the beginning of the Red Dot Design Week, during which this year’s award winners and Shimadzu will be celebrated online. From 22 June 2021 they will also be included in the exhibition “Design on Stage” in the Red Dot Design Museum Essen, where all of the award-winning products are showcased.
